Blockchain and Digital Finance

The aim of the special issue

In the era of big data, blockchain and digital finance have received much attention by researchers and practitioners. First proposed in 2008, the blockchain concept is based on distributed, open ledgers to provide a trust mechanism and intelligent data management for digital business applications. Initially, blockchain applications focused on creating digital currencies (including bitcoin) but has been extended to digital finance and other business fields. Meanwhile, digital finance has been adopted more broadly by companies and consumers. For instance, digital finance innovations like digital payments, crowdfunding, digital lending, supply chain finance, and robo-advising have made significant impacts on business and society.

Therefore, the aim of this special issue is to deepen and broaden our understanding of the potential business value generation from innovative blockchain and digital finance applications. The focus is on papers that show how blockchain and digital finance can be applied in novel ways for supporting business processes and operations. We are specifically interested in blockchain and digital finance approaches in various contexts (e.g. digital payments, crowdfunding, digital lending, supply chain finance, and robo-advisors), and its main impact (e.g., economics and society). We also encourage papers that demonstrate the impacts of blockchain and digital finance on the real economy. We appreciate both theoretical and empirical (qualitative and quantitative) studies and particularly welcome interdisciplinary research submissions that cover interrelated issues that are relevant to technology, organizations, and the economy.
